A letter for Military Families,
Thank you for visiting this page and welcome! This is a great resource for military families who are in transition to Fairchild AFB and need information regarding one of our great schools.
'Reintegration' is a term that describes what military children go through when they relocate to new communities and schools, and when parents deploy or return home from a long assignment. It can change roles in the family structure, routines, relationships and behavior which can inevitably lead to disruptions socially and academically in school. The Medical Lake School District is implementing new and useful strategies and practices to become a more supportive school district for our military youth.
I am the new military family advocate for Medical Lake School District. My role is to increase our communication efforts with Fairchild and our military families, act as an on base presence to represent the school district, create programs and practices to help provide support systems for our military students dealing with 'reintegration', and an overall school district representative for military families.
I will work closely with you...the military families, as well as:
-
Military and Family Life Counselors
-
Airman and Family Readiness Center
-
School Liaison Program Manager
-
Force Support Squadron
-
Key Spouses
-
Military Child Education Coalition
-
Military Impacted Schools Association and more.
The goal is to enhance our relationship with the base, with military families and students, and our school district as a whole.
Should you have questions about extracurricular activities, tutoring options or anythins similar, feel free to contact me at anytime. My email address is rornelas@mlsd.org.
If you have questions, we are here for you.
Thank you,
Rey Ornelas
Your Military Family Advocate

Medical Lake School District & Fairchild Air Force Base
An integral part of the Medical Lake School District is Fairchild Air Force Base. Fairchild Air Force Base was originally established in 1942 as the Spokane Air Depot and later renamed in honor of General Muir S. Fairchild (1894–1950). Fairchild Air Force Base is located on the northern border of the school district's boundaries. The Base houses Michael Anderson Elementary School which serves students in prekindergarten to grade 5. Older students living on the base are bused to Medical Lake Middle School and Medical Lake High School approximately 8 miles away.

MLSD works with the School Liaison Program Manager, Military & Family Readiness Center, Exceptional Family Program Manager, Youth Programs and others to support our military connected students. The Military Family Advocate position was created to be a liaison for MLSD to work closely with FAFB and the families assigned to the base.

MLSD Partnering with DoDEA
MLSD is finding innovative ways to offer the students in our district high levels of quality learning opportunities that meet the needs of the 21st century. Our district believes we can operate small schools that offers our military dependent students an environment that is personalized due to its small size and an innovative curriculum offering that goes beyond its normal classrooms walls.
DoDEA Academic Support Program Grant 2024
MLSD’s goal is to ensure high levels of academic growth and achievement, especially for all military connected students. Three specific strategies have been identified and outlined: 1) Build Organizational Capacity, 2) Enhance Classroom, Curriculum, and Instructional Support, and 3) Implement Evidence-Based Strategies. The focus and legacy of this project will be the integration of systems, across all levels, through the deep implementation of high-functioning Professional Learning Communities. It ensures each student receives necessary and appropriate support for high levels of academic growth and achievement and positions them to thrive post secondary. The comprehensive approach of this project emphasizes three targeted strategies and a variety of related, high-leverage activities.

DoDEA STEM Grant 2012-2015
Medical Lake schools have become known as K-12 STEM schools. The schools have built sustainable programs in partnership with the DoDEA to provide a quality education for our students, military and non-military. We have even reached out to neighboring districts to share the STEM resources and knowledge. This new DoDEA project seeks to build on the successful structures and strategies developed through the STEM grant.
